About weBump
weBump is a StreetPass-inspired iPhone app that turns real-world encounters into a collection of profiles.
Nearby iPhones exchange anonymous Rolling IDs over Bluetooth. Each valid encounter becomes a “bump” in a colorful profile grid. Users choose what their profile shares, and the core exchange does not require a live location map, phone-number exchange, contacts upload, or traditional account.

Descriptions and press release
weBump is a StreetPass-inspired iPhone app that turns the people you cross paths with into a colorful, privacy-conscious social collection.
weBump makes everyday life feel a little more interesting by revealing the people who briefly share your world. Bluetooth Rolling IDs turn real-world encounters into a colorful collection of profiles, showing who you crossed paths with, how often your paths meet, and the music, interests, or social identities they chose to share — without a live location map, contacts upload, or traditional account.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
weBump Turns Everyday Encounters Into a Social Collection on iPhone
MARYLAND, June 30, 2026 — Independent student developer Joseph Smithberger today released weBump, a playful new iPhone app inspired by Nintendo 3DS StreetPass. Available now on the App Store, weBump turns the people users cross paths with into a colorful collection that grows as they move through everyday life.
Instead of asking users to trade phone numbers, scan contacts, or watch a live map, weBump uses Bluetooth Low Energy to exchange anonymous Rolling IDs between nearby iPhones. These temporary IDs change every 15 minutes and contain no name, profile data, friend code, or permanent account identifier. After a valid encounter, the app resolves the temporary ID into only the profile information its owner has chosen to share.
Each encounter becomes a “bump.” When users open the app, they see colorful profile bubbles for the people they have crossed paths with and how many times they have bumped again. The result is a personal collection shaped by where the user actually goes, rather than an endless algorithmic content feed.
“I wanted to make a social app that rewards simply going about your day,” says Smithberger, the 18-year-old Maryland student who designed and built weBump independently. “StreetPass made ordinary places feel alive. weBump takes that feeling and turns it into a charming collection on your iPhone.”
Users can personalize both the appearance and content of their profile. A chosen color carries through the profile card and grid bubble, while a short bio, broad area, Apple Music song, album, or playlist, and selected social or gaming identities provide a compact snapshot of who they are.
Separate privacy controls determine whether non-friends can see each category of information, including age, school, area, bio, music, and social handles. Age and school sharing are disabled for users under 18, and optional notification delays help prevent an immediate bump alert from revealing the exact time two people were near each other.
The core bump exchange works through Bluetooth and does not require GPS. weBump does not maintain a precise travel history or display users on a live map. An optional nearby-suggestions feature can use a one-time location reading, which the service stores only as a coarse area bucket.
weBump also integrates with Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, Spotlight, Siri, Shortcuts, and iOS controls. Its interface uses Apple’s Liquid Glass effects on iOS 26 while remaining available on iOS 17 and later.
weBump is available free on the App Store. Every second new bump is wrapped for five hours and can be opened early with an optional rewarded ad. A one-time $5 Supporter purchase removes ads, unlocks all bumps immediately, and adds a Supporter badge.
